Radical Remission – When Terminal Cancer Vanishes

If you’re an avid reader of mine, you know that I am a religious Dr. Oz Show watcher.  Not having the time to watch during school, where I am a Health Communication major, I came back to 21 episodes taped on my DVR!  I am slowly getting through them.

I need to share with you an episode I saw: The guest was Kelly A. Turner, Ph.D. and her book is Radical Remission – the Nine Key Factors That Can Make a Real Difference – Surviving Cancer Against All Odds.  www.radicalremission.com.

Turner_RadicalRemsmall

She found that there were certain people who beat cancer by NOT using conventional medicine.  She wondered what the common thread was that ran through all these different people.  It was quite intriguing.

I went right to my library and got her book.  I’m just in the first chapter, but it is so exciting that I’ve already contacted some acquaintances with cancer to tell them about it.  My next stop was to tell you.

Check out this book, and, as usual, I say don’t wait until you have cancer to make the changes!

The Super Grains You Should Be Eating | The Dr. Oz Show

This was a great segment on The Dr. Oz Show yesterday. And I happened to have two of them in my fridge! Tried teff for breakfast today in place of our staple of steel-cut oats. It was delicious! It is kind of like an earthy, sorta sweet Cream of Wheat. I’m making some now for tomorrow. I will divide it up into portioned-out bowls. I’m going to add canned 100% pumpkin to it after it’s done just like we do with the steel-cut in the slow cooker. I haven’t tried teff in our slow cooker yet. http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/super-grains-you-should-be-eating

It’s Our One Year Plantcentric Anniversary!

I remember it like it was yesterday.  Last Christmas, after a substantial weight loss journey for both of us, I surprised my husband with
Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD’s Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, Rip Esselstyn’s The Engine 2 Diet, Julieanna Hever, M.S., R.D., CPT The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition, The Forks Over Knives Companion Book, and Kathy Hester’s The Vegan Slow Cooker.  After reading Dr. Esselstyn’s & Rip Esselstyn’s books, my husband, Bill, turned to me and said, “I’m going vegan.  You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I am.  I’m starting now.”  I about choked!  We had just “come out” as vegetarian, but this was different. This was really radical.  Go without cheese??  And ice cream and pudding?  I shakily said, “OK.  If you are, I am too.”  Gulp!

Then, we watched Dr. Robert Lustig’s The Bitter Truth About Sugar

We had already been following the Rule of 5 from You on a Diet by Michael F. Roizen, MD and Mehmet C. Oz, MD, one of which was no high fructose corn syrup, but now we cut out any kind of added sugar.

We are also learning about GMO’s and trying to cut them out of our diet.  Pretty hard when there is currently no labeling.  We definitely are supporting legislation to have all food that has GMO’s in them to be labeled.
What a great year it’s been.  It hasn’t been hard.  We just armed ourselves with knowlege about the effects of dairy and used vegan cookbooks.  We discovered great new flavors, spices and ways of cooking.  No meat, no dairy, no added oil and no added sugar.  Our palates have really grown.

Dr. Weil’s Roasted Winter Squash and Apple Soup as Seen on Dr. Oz Show

I made this tonight (sans the Cilantro-Walnut Pesto, olive oil and salt)  Very good.  Very filling.

Take some time to cook with your family by coming together for this
comforting soup. Make extra and freeze for future dinners. For an
extra special touch, serve in warm bowls and garnish with dollops of
Cilantro-Walnut Pesto.
Ingredients
1 large winter squash (about 2 1/2 pounds), such as butternut,
buttercup or kabocha; peeled, seeded and cut into 2-inch pieces
2 medium onions, peeled and quartered
3 garlic cloves, peeled
2 tart, firm apples, peeled, cored and quartered
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Salt to taste
Red chili powder to taste
4 to 5 cups vegetable broth

Directions
Preheat oven to 400°F. In a large roasting pan, toss the squash,
onions, garlic and apples with the oil to coat. Season well with the
salt and chili.

Roast, stirring every 10 minutes, until the vegetables are fork tender
and lightly browned, about 40 minutes.

Put half of the vegetables and 2 cups of the broth in a food processor
and purée until smooth. Repeat with the remaining vegetables and
broth. Return puréed mixture to the pot. If the soup is too thick, add
more broth. Correct the seasoning and heat to a simmer.

Anti-Cancer Easy Curry Turmeric Tofu Stir Fry with Fresh Cabbage Recipe

We got a couple cabbages and red onions from the stand down the road, and were wondering what to do with them.

I was feeling creative and just made this super filling, super healthy dish.  Cabbage, carrots, squash, onions, tofu, curry, garlic, ginger, turmeric,  and broccoli are cancer fighters straight off Dr. Oz’s Anti-Cancer Shopping List. http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/anti-cancer-shopping-list .

No real measurements.  Just use what you have and add to taste.  What could be easier?

2 portions from bag Normandy Blend frozen vegetables, thawed and microwaved a few minutes

sliced fresh cabbage

diced red onion or an onion

2 servings tofu, organic, non gmo

Vegetable Broth (no salt)

Curry, turmeric, ginger, chopped garlic, freshly ground pepper, cayenne, Nutritional Yeast, Bragg’s Liquid Aminos or low sodium soy sauce non gmo

Pour some veg. broth in bottom of cast iron skillet.  Cooking in cast iron adds iron to your dish.  Heat on med/high.

Cut tofu into 2 slices.  Sprinkle with turmeric and Liquid Aminos.  When broth is hot, add tofu and heat on both sides.  Set aside.

Add onions and cabbage to skillet.  Cook a couple minutes.  Add bag of vegetables, more broth, Liquid Aminos, curry, turmeric, cayenne, freshly ground pepper, ginger.  Cook to desired doneness.

Put tofu slices in bottom of serving dish and heap with vegetables and broth.  The hot veggies and broth will reheat your tofu.  Sprinkle with cayenne & Nutritional yeast.

Serving for 2.
